Your Council
A parish council is a local authority that makes decisions on behalf of the people in the parish. It is the level of local government closest to the community, with the district authority (South Lakeland District Council) and the county authority (Cumbria County Council) above it in the hierarchy.
Councillors
Colton Parish Council consists of 9 councillors working to help our community, with 3 councillors working in each of the 3 wards within the Parish. Councillors are supported by the Parish Clerk who is also the Responsible Financial Officer.
Meetings
The public are welcomed at all Parish Council meetings which start at 7pm and are held at Village Halls around the Parish. The Chairman is available from 6.30pm for surgery sessions before each meeting.
Planning
The Parish Council receives a copy of any planning application which has been made within the Parish, and has 28 days in which to respond. A decision is generally made at a council meeting where a majority vote is carried.

Colton Parish Council is required to publish specific documents which have to be made publicly available. This section contains the Parish Council accounts and the findings of the annual internal audit.
